While Marco Topete was canvassing, he saw just a few doors ahead two men drinking and smoking while working on a car. One man was under the car working while the other kept staring at Marco with a stern glare. As he got closer, Marco’s mind told him to skip the door since these two men looked like they would reject him right away. The Holy Spirit, however, convicted him that he should not skip them, so he determined to canvass them anyway.
As he walked up to talk with the men, the one under the car said right away, “Go away! We are not interested in anything you are selling.” Marco, refusing to leave without at least showing one book, placed a DVD in the other man’s hands. He quickly canvassed the man on the DVD, but the man just handed it back with a no.
Marco then began walking away, but after a few steps, the man who had been staring at him called out, “Hey, this is a good work you are doing.” Marco called back, “This is more than a good work. These books have changed my life.” Before he knew what was happening the Holy Spirit had led him back to the two men. He shared his personal testimony with them and told them how just two years previous, God had delivered him from the same lifestyle they were struggling with. One of the men opened up and shared how he does love God, but he doesn’t understand why there are so many churches or which one has the truth. After sharing his personal testimony with them, Marco said, “I am not trying to be pushy, I know you said you’re not interested and that you said you have no money, but I have to show you this book because it changed my life.” He proceeded to show them The Great Controversy while continuing to mix in his personal experience with this book. When he finished sharing with them, the first man who had previously said, “We are not interested in anything you have,” took out his wallet and gave Marco all his cash saying, “If it had been any other person who did not understand what I am struggling with I would have not given them anything, but I feel compelled to help you.” Marco asked if he could give him a book and the man said, “Yes, I want The Great Controversy.”
By this time the second man also pulled out his wallet and handed Marco all the cash he had as well. Marco asked the second man, “Can I give you a book?” The man said, “Yes, I want The Great Controversy too.” Again Marco felt the Holy Spirit speaking to him, prompting him to ask the men to make a decision to accept and follow Christ. He appealed to the men, reminding them that we are not promised tomorrow. They both responded to the appeal and Marco helped them seal their decision by praying with them.
